My Dad & I took a large cover over to my Uncle & Aunt’s house to protect part of their large pie cherry tree. On the way back from their house we stopped at my Grandma’s and my Dad said to go check on her tree in the back yard. WOW, it was loaded! I didn’t even know there was a cherry tree back there 🙂
It’s a sour cherry tree with little cherries that have yellow flesh. I picked what was ripe and then went every other day to pick what I could before the birds ate them all. My Grandma and I eventually covered what we could to protect even more from the birds, I’d like to think it helped a little.
After each time I picked, I’d pitted the cherries and froze them on a cookie sheet. They all went into a large container and I’ll make something with them later in the year when there isn’t so much to harvest. What should I make with them? Pie, galette, jam, coffee cake… ???
I also saved the pits as I went and soaked them in some Seagram’s Seven. The pits infuse the liquor with a nice almond flavor. It will be great to use in cocktails or to bake with!
How do you enjoy sour cherries?
