Another one of my body care goods was coming to an end so it was time to make my own! I’ve looked at a few deodorant recipes or ways to supplement vitamins so you can go without but I figured I’d go with homemade before I try to ditch using it altogether. There are a few recipes where you just make a powder and dust it on but I liked the ease of application when coconut oil was added in so you can wipe it on.
I’ve been using this deodorant all week and I have to say I’m impressed. It works far better than the pricey “natural/organic” versions I’ve been buying. The few downsides I see so far is that it’s not as hard as purchased products so you can’t rub it on really hard (not a big deal) and it does leave some white residue on clothes (so I’ll have to be careful with dark clothes, I’ve gotten use to clear products).
All in all I like this simple deodorant ”recipe.” Have you ever made your own? How do you make it?
{How To} Homemade Deodorant
1/4 cup baking soda
1/4 cup corn starch or arrowroot powder
Coconut Oil (a little over a 1/4 cup was what worked for me)
Put the powders in a bowl and whisk with a fork. Add enough coconut oil to make the mixture come together. A fork is an easy way to mix in the coconut oil and I also used my hands at the end to break up any final lumps. Put in a jar and apply with fingertips or use a recycled deodorant container.

I love the idea of making my own deodorant but how do you keep the coconut oil from leaving greasy stains on your clothes. This is the same recipe I got a few weeks ago but haven’t tried yet. Thanks for the pictures.
The coconut oil mostly soaks into your skin… there is a little residue on my clothes but it washes out so we’ll see if it builds up over time. So far, so good.
I’ve just starting making my own deodorant as well! My recipe is similar but a little different. I use the baking soda and (non GMO) corn starch, but instead of the coconut oil, I do straight Lavender essential oil. I use Be Young’s brand which is really pure. My body loves lavender oil and it doesn’t bother my skin, but that might not be the case for everyone. (if you have more sensitive skin you can mix lavender with a base oil, like olive, coconut or sweet almond oil) What I do is put a few drops of the lavender oil (smells amazing and is a powerful natural antibacterial agent) straight on my pits and rub it in. Then I scoop up a bit of the baking soda mixture and rub it on my pits. Not as conveinent as a roll on, but it works great. The only time I found it didn’t seem to work as well was right before my period. I think what ever goes on with my hormones at that point causes me to sweat more and probably be more stinky, too. Was that TMI??? Sorry………….
Nope! Thanks for sharing
thanks for the tips!
I like these ideas…thank-you.
Adding some powdered kelp meal and tea tree or lavender eo would make this detoxing and help drain your lymph system, too. You can make it harder by adding a tbsp of melted beeswax to the mix.
Hmmm, ths husband has been complaining that anti-perspirants make him “feel bad” but can’t find a plain deodorant he likes….wonder what the chances of getting him to use a DIY stick would be?
My husband’s been using it for a few weeks and likes it!
I am going to try the recipe, my husband can not use deodorants, so I purchased him a deodorant stone, he’s been using it for a couple of years and loves it.
Wow! Thanks for this – I must try it – I really cannot stand the smell of standard anti-perspirant – and of course it really is not good for you. Herbal versions often don’t deal with the smell – will try this one and see if it does.
You could add bees wax or carnuba wax or anyother ‘type’ of cosmetic natural way. . check out http://www.mountainroseherbs.com
I believe it is 4parts oil ie/coconut oil, as in your receipe above. .to 1 part wax. . or at least that is the ratio for ‘lip balm’ recipes. .it could even be harder than lip balm. .but that sounds about right. . this would make it less powdery and you could even cut back on some of the powders. . any hoo. . I thouhgt about making some and well that is what I would do . .a friend of mine made a batch with a similar recipe and I too thought it was too soft. . I just use coconut oil and cocobutter with some essential oils in it. . I just rub a big’ol glob of that on under my arms. . good fats for the body anyhoo. .. to keep the lymphs clean. .

Have been using this recipe for years and we noticed that even if we skip a few days ,like when we run out,we now have no body odor, Where as before with commercial stuff if we skipped a day ,we knew it.
